So last weekend , Earth Day weekend, while giving a talk at Natural Grocers in Boise, the big question asked by curious participants was:” If I do this thing where will I get My Protein?” First I should tell you that I advocate a Whole Food Plant Based Diet and I believe and I am living proof that you can do it, if you want to and do it well. You can have plenty of energy, health and vitality. I want you to NOT worry about where you are going to get Protein. As Dr. Joel Fuhrman puts it, “almost all Americans get about 50% more protein than they actually need. Almost any assortment of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and whole grains will supply 40grm. of protein per 1,000 calories. most people consume about 2,000 calories or more a day. That’s 80grms of protein – much more than we need which is 50grms a day. When we meet our needs for calories with natural wholefoods, we automatically get sufficient protein- without really trying”  He goes on to say that as long as you are getting foods from all of the categories stated above and not weighing heavy on fruit and refined grains and processed foods and are truly eating a variety of vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds and wholegrains there would be no need to worry about protein. In fact it is exceedingly rare under these circumstances that an individual would find it a necessity to consume animal meat for the sake of more protein. There are high performance athletes that now say that a wholefood plant passed diet gives them a leaner, higher energy for achievement of their fitness goals. Eat organic when you can and Supplement your vitamin b12 and eat cultured vegetables and you are on the path to a healthier leaner you. PEACE TO YOU AND YOURS!
